This collection is made up of letters that Irving Grinnell received during his travels in Europe from 1858-1861 and in 1864. Philip Schuyler, Jr., and M. C. Heckscher ("Tilly") shared news about their social lives in New York City from 1858-1859; Grinnell's mother, Julia Irving Grinnell, wrote about New Yorkers' reactions to the Civil War. The collection also contains material related to the New York Yacht Club.

Irving Grinnell was born on August 9, 1839, the son of New York Congressman Moses Hicks Grinnell (1803-1877) and Julia Irving (1803-1872). He had two sisters, Julia and Fanny; his uncle was Massachusetts Congressman Joseph Grinnell (1788-1885). Irving Grinnell received a bachelor's degree from Columbia College (now Columbia University) and worked for his father's shipping firm before retiring to Dutchess County, New York.
